Unexpected, perhaps, but true. I write from the Munich airport, from whence my flight to Tbilisi will depart in a few hours. I had essentially the whole day here, so I took advantage of it and went into the city. Went first to the Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde, which has an impressive collection of traditional art from many (non-European) parts of the world. I had a lunch of sausage and a soft pretzel at the Viktualenmarkt, a big open-air market in the center of the city, wandered around and read on the grass for a while in the Englischer Garten (Munich's version of Central Park), and even managed to catch the 5:00 playing of the clockwork automata in the tower of the Neues Rathaus, a ridiculously Neo-Gothic but nonetheless impressive edifice. By that time, however, it had started to get cold, and as much as I appreciated a cool day in between hot Burlington and even hotter Tbilisi, I decided to call it a day. In addition, as I realized after falling asleep several times on the S-Bahn train back to the airport, I was exhausted.
Unfortunately, there's not really any hope of getting a good night's sleep tonight, either, as my flight will cost me another two hours in time change and land me in Georgia at 3:00 am local time. That's the traveling life!
